Art Workshops in Wirral

Enjoyable, Educational, Inspiring and Affordable

I offer art workshops from my home studio - a light and airy conservatory in the Wirral peninsula in north west England. Student numbers at each workshop are kept to a minimum (2 or 3 students) to facilitate one-to-one tuition. My workshops offer step-by-step tuition in an informal, friendly atmosphere, where students and tutor can bounce ideas off one another and enjoy a productive, informative and fulfilling day. Classes are suitable for beginners or more experienced artists.

Most workshops are structured around the reproduction of an 'old master' painting, followed by the production of a new, unique piece of work in the spirit of that 'old master'. The close analysis and reproduction of an 'old master' painting provides a telling insight into their working methods. I believe it is the only way to truly understand painters' practical methodology. Attempting an 'old master' painting utilising as many aspects of their technique as feasible equips us with skills we can take into our own work.

In the days leading up to each workshop I study in as much depth as feasible the working methods of the respective artists under scrutiny. I then attempt my own reproduction of at least one, and sometimes two, 'old master' paintings. My approach is dictated to by the working methods of the respective artist and by the constraints of time; I generally try to reproduce each painting in around 3 hours, mirroring the time available to produce a painting in each full-day workshop. Each stage of the reproduction is photographed. At the end of the process, I collate and print the photographs of the working stages in order to provide students with visual reference points that guide you logically from start to finish in logical, understandable stages.

Choose from a range of established workshops or commission bespoke workshops tailored to your needs. Group bookings of up to 3 people are welcomed. Materials including paints, brushes, canvases, palettes, easels and jars are provided, though students are encouraged to also bring their own materials should they feel more comfortable using them. Food and refreshments are also provided.

We look forward to picking up the brushes with you!

Bespoke Art Workshops

If there is a particular theme, style or artist that you would like to study at a workshop then please let us know and we may be able to tailor a workshop to your specific needs. My specialism is the Impressionist period, but I welcome and encourage invitations to study methods from other periods. Dates and subjects are entirely negotiable. We are able to accommodate up to 3 students per workshop. Half-day (10am-1pm) or full-day workshops (10am-5pm) may be commissioned. Please contact me to discuss a bespoke painting workshop.
